Choosing the Right Plant for Your Closed Terrarium
Closed terrariums are like little self-sustaining worlds, a mini greenhouse on your shelf. Because they hold in moisture and create a humid environment, the plants you choose should love damp, warm conditions. Here's what to keep in mind:
Pick Humidity-Loving Plants
Closed terrariums are naturally humid, so choose plants that thrive in those conditions. Great options include:
- Asparagus fern - delicate, feathery texture
- Mosses - ideal for ground cover
- Fittonia - beginner-friendly and easy to grow
- Polka dot - adds a pop of colour
- Earth star - a star-like rosette adding a texture to your terrarium
- Peperomia - compact and easy to grow
- Syngonium - great for both open and closed terrariums
- Ficus Gingensin - a mini bonsai-like feature for your terrarium
Size Matters
Keep your terrarium containers' measurements in mind, and look for slow-growing, small plants that won't outgrow your container too quickly. All of the plants above make excellent choices.
Think About Layering
Combine plants of different shapes and textures, like feathery asparagus fern paired with cushion moss, for a natural, woodland feel.
Care Level
Close terrariums are fairly low maintenance since they recycle their own water. Just avoid succulents or cacti, as they don't enjoy humidity.
Group Similar Plants
Make sure all the plants in your terrarium enjoy the same conditions. A fern and moss will thrive together, but a cactus or succulent would struggle.
Tip: Once planted, place your terrarium in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can make your terrarium too hot, "cooking" the plants inside.
