About Glow-in-the-Dark Mushroom Terrariums

Did you know there are over 100 species of glow-in-the-dark mushrooms around the world? I once watched a documentary about the Amazon Rainforest, and one scene stayed with me: a jungle floor dotted with glow-in-the-dark mushrooms, softly illuminating the night like something out of the Avatar movie. It was mesmerising. Ever since, I've dreamed of experiencing that magical moment in person.

While a night trip to the Amazon might be a distant dream, I'm a creative soul, and I knew I wanted to capture that sense of magic and bring it to leaves and prickles. 

Handmade with Care - Inspired by Wonders of Nature

One of the questions I get asked so often is: "Are these real mushrooms?" The Answer is no, and here's why. Mushrooms are actually the short-lived fruiting bodies of fungi, designed to spread spores. They typically only last a few days, which makes them unsuitable for long-term use in a terrarium display. Although inspired by real bioluminescent mushrooms, these are hand-sculpted using glow-in-the-dark polymer clay. Each one is carefully handmade by me, so no two are exactly alike, making them a charming, natural-looking alternative to real mushrooms.

What Makes a Mushroom Glow

In nature, the glowing mushrooms produce light by using a chemical reaction, which involves luciferin, a luciferase enzyme, and molecular oxygen. This chemical reaction, called bioluminescence, is a similar to how fireflies produce light. 

But these glowing mushies are hand-sculpted using glow-in-the-dark polymer clay. Glow-in-the-dark polymer clay glows because it contains phosphorescent pigments. These pigments absorb light energy and then slowly release it as light, creating the soft, magical glow.
